The #1 Leadership Mistake That Kills Team Ownership

Control erodes ownership more than leaders realize. Every rescued decision quietly teaches a team to wait for the next rescue.
Leaders who care deeply often cause the problem they're trying to prevent. A decision escalates, the leader answers quickly and well, the team ships — and one more loop of dependency closes. Repeat for a year and you have a brilliant leader surrounded by a passive team.
Ownership is a muscle, control is atrophy
Ownership grows when people make consequential decisions and live with the results in a safe environment. Every intercepted decision removes a rep. The short-term quality gain costs long-term capability — and the invoice arrives as slow decision flow and disengaged seniors.
- Answer questions with questions: 'What do you recommend, and why?'
- Define decision boundaries explicitly — then honor them publicly.
- Debrief outcomes, don't preempt them.
